Decorating
Tip: Focal Point

Decorating a room around a
focal point makes any decorating project so much easier. A
focal point can be a window or fireplace
or painting.
Whatever naturally tends to catch the eye should be the starting point
for your decorating plan.
If you have a fireplace in a
room, consider it your greatest asset. In addition to providing a cozy
fire in the winter, a fireplace can be a great
inspiration for decorating. During colder months, when the fire is
roaring, minimize clutter on the mantle and focus on the fireplace
itself. If you store extra wood near the fireplace, make sure
it’s neatly stacked. Better yet, camouflage it with a stylish
cover.
In warmer months, dress up the
mantle and place a mirror or painting in the center. The eye is drawn
to this central area, which provides a great opportunity to showcase
your skills and give you even more décor ideas.
Although an entertainment
center can be the focal point of a room (usually by
default), it may not be ideal. Rooms are meant to be
lived in and experienced. Watching TV is a passive
activity, and it’s good to discourage too much TV-watching.
Instead, buy a nice cabinet with doors to hold the television. When
you’re not watching, keep the cabinet doors closed. Use your
creative energy to camouflage the cabinet as…just a cabinet.
Put a bouquet of flowers or a candle arrangement on top.
For rooms without fireplaces, a
large window can be the focal point. Even if the window is small, a
classy window treatment will draw the eye. Arrange lush plants near the
window and hang paintings on each side of the window.
When trying to locate the focal
point of any room, keep this in mind: Find the room’s best
asset, and your job will be half done.
